How to Discover What You Want in Life

Sending your kids off to college can be a new beginning for them and for you – whether you are crying your eyes out or kicking up your heels in celebration – one thing we all hope…

is that they will invest in classes that aim toward a particular target for a life of happiness and success.

But many of us in mid life or even later admit that we have no idea what we want to be when we grow up, so how on earth could we expect our 18-year-olds to know?

Sometimes our personalities guide us – if we are more introverted we might prefer the solitude & quiet of a country lifestyle whereas an extrovert may be energized by the hustle of city life.

Then we consider aptitude… We are all gifted with certain talents or skill sets – sometimes through nature, sometimes through nurture.   Some are blessed with mechanical abilities and others may show a natural understanding and empathy for people or animals… I think you get the idea.  All of this plays into the choices we make for our career and our lives.

But what about the life we dream of living?

I heard some great advice about how to discover what we really want in life.  We should do this ourselves and share with loved ones as they are about to begin a new chapter of life.

The objective is to discover what you really want in life.

  1. Write on paper a list of 3 things you want most in life. Limit your list to the first three things that come to mind.  Don’t overthink your response, it is important to list the first 3 things that pop into your head.  Put this list in the bottom of your sock drawer.

NEVER think that you are not worthy of what you want.

  2. Every 3 months, repeat #1 – without referencing previous lists – *make a note on your calendar to repeat every 3 months.
  3. At the end of 9 months pull open your sock drawer and dig out all of the lists.   Gently blow to remove the lint.  Lay them out side by side and look closely.

There it is –

do you see that common thread?

That one thing that made it to every list.

This is the answer to what you want most of your life.

This method can be used at any stage of life…  it is never too late to discover and go after your dreams.

We only get one shot at this life,

it is best to discover what we want,

take careful aim and start marching forward.

You got this!

Katie – most of us don’t want to wait 9 months – but it seems to be the most accurate way I have heard to figure out the age old question! Perfect for a college student!
