Our Simple Life

Lost Mule Lodge

…A Journey that Began with a Cabin in the Woods

I am so in love with our simple life.

When we sold our suburban home and moved into a crooked little cabin in the woods that was 1/8 the size, most people would have questioned our sanity.  Having to store 98% of our “stuff”, I had no idea of the serenity this life would bring us. In a short amount of time all that important “stuff” we had stored held very little value in our new lives.  It seemed we no longer needed any of it.

Getting up to catch the sunrise and let the hens out of their coop is pure joy. You will get a formal introduction to our “Ladies” in an upcoming blog.  These hens chase after me like puppies.  Here is a sneak peek at Mary Kay and me…  I am the one wearing a farm coat, or is it a barn coat, ummmm…. whatever you call it – it is perfect for living here!

And then we have our dogs.  Shh..  don’t tell them they are dogs.  The only time they seem like dogs is when they have found something with a remarkably divine aroma to roll in!  Ahhh…  how we love these magnificent beasts!!  To see our dogs run through our fields chasing after the 4wheeler brings me as much joy as it does them. They are a huge part of this place and I am sure you will meet them later too.

I love my little college town with the fresh youthful faces and the best, juiciest tomatoes at our local Farmer’s Market!  And driving through the countryside you will notice the drivers of pick up trucks have the most friendly waves.   I smile and wave back thinking how happy I am to be here – living in this moment.

Then at the end of our day, I love crawling into bed smelling the fresh air dried sheets with the moonlight shining through our open windows.  There is a whole mystical world of nature that we hear out those windows at night.  I can’t help but wonder what the various howls of those illusive coyotes mean.  Some things are best kept a mystery, this may be one of those things.

We welcome you to follow along our journey.  There is still so much to do as we finish the construction of our “Refined Rustic” home.  We will show you various tips and tricks we have learned along our way.

Everywhere I look and everything I see brings a smile to my face.  It didn’t take us long to realize – it is the simplest things in life that bring the most joy.  We only wish we had done this long ago.

Wow Lynn… thank you! I enjoy writing this little blog. It is fun and has become my social interaction since we moved out here in the middle of nowhere. I feel like I am writing to my friends and family.

  2. So cool to hear another story about downsizing and getting rid of all your stuff. I am a 58 year old nomad with my hubs and we downsized a few years ago to travel the world as housesitters. Having no permanent home and no stuff has been liberating and oh so freeing. We are currently on an olive farm in the mountains of Spain watching the milky way and counting stars under a semi full moon. Nature at its finest is our backyard and we are loving it.

Thank you Simon – it was easy to adapt to this life, it would be much more difficult to give this up and go back the other direction! We are so grateful for all we have here!
